How it’s calculated

Both dates are turned into day numbers on the calendar and subtracted:

days = end date − start date

By default the start date is counted and the end date is not, which is how most people count durations (“from Monday to Wednesday is 2 days”). Tick “Include the end date” to count both, which adds 1.

Weekdays are the days from Monday to Friday in the same range. Public holidays are not removed because they differ by country.

Examples

A whole year

From January 1, 2026 to December 31, 2026 is 364 days, or 365 if you include the end date. The range contains 260 weekdays (261 including December 31, a Thursday).

Countdown to a holiday

From November 8, 2026 to December 25, 2026 is 47 days, or 6 weeks and 5 days, of which 34 are weekdays.

Frequently asked questions

Should I include the end date?

Leave it off to measure elapsed time, such as the length of a stay or a loan. Turn it on when both the first and last day count, such as the days of a festival or a booking where you are charged for both.

Are leap years counted?

Yes. Every real calendar day is counted, so a range that crosses February 29 in a leap year is one day longer than the same range in a common year.

Does it remove public holidays?

No. The weekday count only removes Saturdays and Sundays. Public holidays vary by country and region, so subtract the ones that apply to you.

Can the end date be before the start date?

Yes. The calculator shows the number of days between them and notes that the end date comes first, so you can count backwards from a date.

Do time zones or daylight saving time affect the count?

No. The count uses calendar dates only, so a day is always one day, even when the clocks change.
