How it’s calculated

Annual pay is the hourly rate times the hours you are paid for in a year:

annual = hourly × hours per week × paid weeks per year
hourly = annual ÷ (hours per week × paid weeks per year)

Monthly pay is annual ÷ 12, biweekly is two weeks of pay, and daily assumes a 5-day week. A full-time year of 40 hours × 52 weeks is 2,080 paid hours.

Examples

Hourly to salary

25 an hour × 40 hours × 52 weeks = 52,000 a year. That is 4,333.33 a month, 2,000 every two weeks or 1,000 a week.

Salary to hourly

A 60,000 salary over 2,080 hours is 28.85 an hour. If you work 37.5 hours a week and are paid for 48 weeks, 85,000 a year is 85,000 ÷ 1,800 = 47.22 an hour.

Frequently asked questions

How many working hours are in a year?

A common full-time figure is 2,080 hours: 40 hours a week for 52 weeks. If you work 37.5 hours a week, it is 1,950. Change the hours and weeks to match your contract.

Should I count paid vacation and holidays?

If your vacation and holidays are paid, keep 52 weeks, because you are paid for them. If you are only paid for the weeks you work, as many contractors are, enter the number of weeks you actually bill.

Is this before or after tax?

Before. The results are gross pay. Taxes, social contributions, retirement savings and other deductions depend on where you live and your situation, so your take-home pay will be lower.

Is overtime included?

No. The calculator assumes one hourly rate for all hours. If you regularly work overtime at a higher rate, calculate those hours separately and add them.

What is the difference between biweekly and semimonthly pay?

Biweekly means every two weeks, which is 26 paychecks in most years. Semimonthly means twice a month, which is 24 paychecks, so each semimonthly check is slightly larger.
