How it’s calculated

The tip is a percentage of the bill, and the total is shared equally:

tip = bill × tip% ÷ 100
total = bill + tip
each = total ÷ people

With rounding on, each share is rounded up to the next whole amount, so the group may leave a little more than the exact total. The extra is shown so you can decide what to do with it.

Examples

Dinner for three

An 84.50 bill with an 18% tip: 84.50 × 0.18 = 15.21 tip, so the total is 99.71 and each of 3 people pays 33.24 (33.2367 before rounding to the cent).

Rounded shares

A 67.30 bill with a 15% tip is 77.40 in total. Split 3 ways that is 25.80 each; rounded up, everyone pays 26 and the group leaves 78.00 against the 77.40 total.

Frequently asked questions

Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?

Customs differ. Many people tip on the pre-tax amount, others on the final bill. Enter whichever amount you want the tip to be based on.

How much should I tip?

It depends on the country and the service. In the United States, 15% to 20% at sit-down restaurants is a widely used range, while in many other countries service is included in the bill or tips are smaller. Check local custom.

What if the shares do not divide evenly?

Amounts are shown to the cent, so a share like 33.2367 displays as 33.24. Collecting that from everyone can leave a cent or two over. Use the round-up option for simple whole amounts.

Can I split unevenly?

This calculator splits equally. For an uneven split, run it once per person with their own items as the bill and the same tip percentage.

Does it work with any currency?

Yes. Amounts have no currency symbol, so the calculation is the same whether you are paying in dollars, euros, pounds or anything else.
