How it’s calculated

The calculator counts whole years first, then whole months, then the remaining days:

years = full years since birth
months = full months since the last birthday
days = days since the last “month-day”

The “month-day” is the same day of the month as the birth date. Months have different lengths, so when that day does not exist in a month (the 31st in April, or February 29 in a common year) the 1st of the next month is used instead. Every calendar day is real, so leap years are handled exactly. Total days is the plain count of calendar days between the two dates.

This means a birthday on February 29 turns over on March 1 in years that are not leap years.

Examples

A typical birthday

Someone born on May 15, 1990 is 36 years, 5 months and 24 days old on November 8, 2026. That is 13,326 days in total. Their 36th birthday was May 15, 2026; the 15th of October was 5 months later, and 24 more days take you to November 8.

A leap-day birthday

Someone born on February 29, 2000 is 26 years, 8 months and 10 days old on November 8, 2026, which is 9,749 days.

Frequently asked questions

How is age calculated exactly?

Age is the number of full years since the date of birth, then the full months since the last birthday, then the leftover days. This matches the way most people and official forms state an age.

How are leap years handled?

The calculator uses the real calendar, so February has 29 days in leap years (every year divisible by 4, except century years not divisible by 400). Total days counts every calendar day, including February 29s.

When does someone born on February 29 turn a year older?

In common years this calculator treats March 1 as the birthday, the day after February 28. Laws and customs differ from place to place, and many people celebrate on February 28 instead.

Does the time of birth matter?

No. The calculation uses calendar dates only, so the age changes at the start of the birthday wherever you are. If you need hours and minutes, use the days between dates calculator and multiply by 24.

Can I find my age on a future date?

Yes. Change the “age on” date to any date after the birth date, for example the date of an exam, a trip or a retirement milestone.
