How it’s calculated
Length, weight and volume are converted through a base unit (meter, kilogram or liter) using exact factors:
result = value × factor(from) ÷ factor(to)
Key definitions: 1 inch = 2.54 cm, 1 foot = 0.3048 m, 1 mile = 1,609.344 m, 1 pound = 0.45359237 kg, 1 US gallon = 3.785411784 L and 1 UK gallon = 4.54609 L.
Temperature needs an offset as well as a scale:
°C = (°F − 32) × 5/9
°F = °C × 9/5 + 32
K = °C + 273.15

Running distance
10 km × 1,000 ÷ 1,609.344 = 6.214 miles. In the other direction, 1 meter is 3.281 feet.
Fever check and a recipe
100 °F is (100 − 32) × 5/9 = 37.78 °C. 2 liters of water is 2 ÷ 0.2365882365 ≈ 8.45 US cups, and 5 lb is 2.268 kg.
Frequently asked questions
Why are US and UK gallons different?
They come from different historical definitions. The US gallon is 231 cubic inches (3.785 L), while the UK imperial gallon is defined as exactly 4.54609 L, about 20% larger. US and UK pints differ for the same reason.
Why isn’t temperature conversion a simple multiplication?
Celsius and Fahrenheit have different zero points as well as different degree sizes. You must subtract or add 32 as well as scale by 5/9 or 9/5. Kelvin uses Celsius-sized degrees but starts at absolute zero.
Is a fluid ounce the same as an ounce?
No. A fluid ounce measures volume and an ounce measures weight. One US fluid ounce of water weighs about 1.04 ounces, so they are close for water but differ for other liquids.
What is a stone?
A stone is a British unit of weight equal to 14 pounds, or 6.35029318 kg. It is still common in the UK and Ireland for body weight.
How precise are the results?
The factors are exact definitions, and results are shown to 10 significant digits. Very large or very small results switch to scientific notation, such as 1e-9.
